Last night as the buzzer sounded at Penn, the boys basketball team did what they had done the previous six years. They beat Penn. It wasn’t easy as they trailed by double digits in the second half, but after forcing overtime and claiming a 59-56 win over the Kingsmen, the Knights improved to 9-2 on the year (and did we mention that we have not lost to Penn since the 2013-14 season?)
To understand just how historic last night was, we must first rewind to September 25th, 2020. On that night, the Marian Knight football team also traveled to Penn. Much like the basketball team, the boys trailed in the 2nd half, but came out with a 20-16 victory.
With those victories in football and boys basketball, it marks the first time in 51 years that Marian has defeated Penn in each of those sports in the same year. It was during the 1969-70 school year when Tom Creevey and Kevin Canfield were walking the halls of Marian High School. That was the last time Marian defeated Penn on the football field and ironically, won an Overtime game in basketball.
Last night, Mitchell Menting and Ky’Rell Franklin joined them in being a part of both the football and basketball teams that knocked off Penn over a half century later. Menting was huge with back to back 3’s in the Overtime period and Franklin came up with defensive play, after defensive play to keep the Knights in the game. They received plenty of help from Deaglan Sullivan and Richard Brooks, who scored 17 each to lead Marian just as Creevey and Canfield got plenty of help from Marty Monserez and Thomas Moorman over 50 years ago.
What a time to be a Marian Knight! #OnceAKnightAlwaysAKnight
