On Saturday, the Marian Boys Basketball team came up short in their quest to win a Sectional Title, falling to defending State Champion and this year’s favorite, Culver Academy. The Knights finished the year with a 20-4 record, the fourth time in the past five years that the boys have won 20 or more games in a season and fifth overall.
Robb Berger has been the coach at Marian for all five of the 20-win seasons. In his twelve years at Marian, Coach Berger has won 14 or more games in nine of those seasons. In the history of Marian basketball, the Knights have only won 14 or more games in five other seasons that Berger was not the coach. With the victory on Friday against John Glenn, Coach Berger claimed his 300th career victory (200 of those wins have been at Marian). His 200-76 record as the head coach at Marian is good for a .724 winning percentage and averages over 16 wins a season. He was also recently named Coach of the Year in the Northern Indiana Conference.
The accolades do not stop at Coach Berger. Jaden Ivey had a season we have not seen at Marian before. His 598 points surpassed a previous record of 581 by Demetrius Jackson for most points in a single season. Jaden was also named NIC Most Valuable Player, giving the Knights the sixth such award in the past nine years. Jackson was a 3-time winner (2011, 2012, 2013), Devin Cannady claimed the award in 2015 and Jair Rodgers took home the award in 2016.
Coley Quinn was named to the 2nd team and Jerry Bracey was voted Honorable Mention to round up the Conference accolades.
The Senior Class of Quinn, Jacob Bishop, Chase Sumner and Kyron King end their careers with 77 wins, which ties the class of 2018 for most wins in a career.
