Game Recap

The Lady Knights fought to a 3-3 tie in the sectional championships only to concede a double overtime goal with just 3 minutes remain to fall to the St. Joe Indians 4-3. The first half was played under good weather conditions and Marian had the better of the play. Senior Caroline Baughman scored a great goal in the 20th minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Both Francie Hartnagel and Megan Bullock created great scoring chances but the Indians keeper kept the game at just 1 goal. The weather took a serious turn for the worse as monsoon like rain and winds made the second half hard to play. Going against the wind, the Knights created little attack and defended well. Senior Keeper Hannah Harry-Shade had 8 saves in the second half. With just 19 minutes to play, a penalty kick was award to the Indians and the converted to tie the score. The Indians used that momentum and weather conditions to score twice more to extend the lead to 3-1. The Marian Knights leadership and character would not let the night end this way. Against the wind, The Knights mounted an epic comeback in here final 10 minutes. Junior Francie Hartnagel skipped a shot off the crossbar. One minute later, Junior Megan Bullock was taken down in the box and would convert the penalty to cut the deficit to 3-2. With just three minutes to play, Francie Hartnagel dropped the ball to Caroline Baughman who bent an incredible shot into the top corner to tie the game at 3. The Knights would create a few more scoring chances but could not break through. The game was delayed with just 3 minutes left in the first overtime due to lightning in the area. After a 30 minute break, The Knights would come within inches of taking the lead. A free kick was served in and the Knights would have 3 chances at the game winner from within 3 yards. Both Bullock’s and Reyna Cruz’s efforts were cleared off the line and Francie hit the cross bar. The Indians would score the game winner on a counter attack with just two minutes left in the second overtime.

A great season comes to an end with a record of 11-6-1. The program graduated an incredible group of seniors that have left their mark on the program.
