Coach Reggie Glon begins his 24th season with the Knights tonight as Football is Back! Marian travels to South Bend Clay, a team they have defeated five straight times, to open the 2017 campaign. Expectations are still high for the preseason 8th ranked Knights coming off back to back Sectional Championships and an NIC South Championship last year.
Coach Glon will have to replace 2,215 rushing yards and 34 rushing touchdowns as Zander Horvath has graduated. He along with Michael Dennison, Conner Glon, Deontre Nyengo, Jack Tiller and Bryce Tomasi leave a void in production and leadership. However, with plenty of guys ready to step up, Marian aims for their third straight sectional championship and a second consecutive NIC-South title.
The backfield for Marian will have a different look, but could be just as dangerous as when Tomasi and Horvath put fear into opponents last year. Junior John Brach and Senior Julian Keultjes will carry the load and with home run hitter Ronnie King, the offense is gearing up to be just as dangerous. Catching balls for the Knights will be returning starter Trevor Teumac as well as newcomer Jerry Bracey II. Returning from what was a dominant offensive line last year is Nick Crites and Atanasio Sete as they attempt to repeat the tremendous production from a year ago that saw Marian score over 36 points per game.
Defensive Coordinator Mike Davidson’s Defense finished last season 9th in Defensive Average by only giving up 11 points per game. This season, they will look to improve that mark with Sete and Mason Talos return on the defensive line and Brock Van Nevel and Zack Whitfield return at linebacker. Those four will anchor one of the best front seven’s in the state. Patrolling the secondary are returning starters Michael Gibson and Mike Hemingway that will make quarterbacks think twice before throwing the football in that direction.
